Training and Support

Once a volunteer has completed the screening and intake process, the tasks of orientation and training begin. Care should be taken that all volunteers within your organization be given proper training for the tasks they will be performing. Although all literacy agencies have a program in place to train volunteer tutors, don’t forget that board members, people providing administrative, fundraising and tech support, and even short-term volunteers also require training to be an effective part of your team.

Offering ongoing training to volunteers demonstrates your support for volunteers who serve in your organization. When CLO asked volunteers to name the things agencies did to support them in their efforts, 76% listed ongoing training as a support tool they appreciated.
