Social Value

“So much hinges on the ability to read – self-respect, access to information or simply the enjoyment of the beauty of our written language. To help someone to achieve any of these is rewarding indeed.”

(A literacy volunteer in Ontario)

“Thanks to my new found skills and self-esteem, I feel more capable to go out and find a great job that I am worthy of.”

(An adult learner in Ontario)

In addition to the economic value calculated in dollars and cents, volunteers make countless other contributions to Ontario’s community literacy organizations.

These contributions include credibility, diversity, respect, and connections to the local community. The importance of the social contributions of volunteers cannot be measured in dollars. Literacy agencies, the adult learners and the volunteers themselves all benefit from volunteer efforts.
