According to the CLO’s 2005 Valued Added survey of community literacy agencies and their volunteers, nearly 800,000 hours of time were donated by literacy volunteers in 2004. Further analysis revealed that volunteers in community literacy agencies contribute a $12.5 million dollars in time annually to the Ontario training system.

Naturally, the inherent value of literacy volunteers goes far beyond simple dollar cost. Nevertheless, an accurate estimate of economic value of literacy volunteers is useful information. Results and methodology from CLO’s Valued Added research project are summarized in the following sections.
